That big event happening in 2010? Yeah, you know the one. Well it promises to offer more than just competition, and of course the city is hoping to rise to the occasion captivating visitors and locals alike. One leap on the cultural front is to boost Vancouver’s abysmal public art quotient with the Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Plan‘s Mapping and Marking Vancouver 2010 initiative, which is commissioning new works that celebrate Vancouver. One of my favourite pieces from the 8 finalists is a mobile postcard kiosk by Vanessa Kwan. Kwan’s cards of Vancouver’s skyline cut as a peephole allow viewers to render any object, texture or vista as our cityscape. The possibilities are endless, and viewers are invited to take photographs of their DIY postcard imagery to share on a website Kwan will be launching. Watch out for the kiosk next February around community places like the Roundhouse and the Central Public Library.
